From Peggy … “My husband Jim and I founded Amber Haven with the mission of “empowering single mothers and young women to not only survive—but to thrive.” We named the foundation in honor of our daughter Amber, who passed away after a brief but beautiful 19 months of life, and we’re excited to be in the process of establishing its 501(c)3 division, Amber Haven, so we can do even more to help women improve their lives.
“Having been a single mother myself, struggling to pay the rent and feed my baby, I know all too well how difficult it is to overcome personal obstacles and move ahead with work, all while caring for your little ones. This clothing drive is just the first of many things we’ll be doing to help empower women. Join us – go to www.amberco.org, click ‘Follow’ on our News and Blog pages.”
WCF Book Club – A Chance to Connect
Our thanks go out to the dozens of people gathered to celebrate the launch of Beyond My Wildest and share in Amber Haven’s mission at the WCF Book Club event on Tuesday, Mar. 15.
The event was a unique opportunity to hear from Peggy about the book writing process, hear some of her favorite excerpts, and get more “behind-the-scenes” details of her life experiences. Like any event where Peggy speaks, there was plenty of laughter, insight and even a few heartfelt tears.
Watch for announcements on upcoming appearances and opportunities to get involved!
Girls on the Run
AmberCo has made its first official donation to Girls on the Run, a nonprofit dedicated to helping girls “be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.”
Girls on the Run’s mission is dear to Amber Haven Co-founder Peggy Larsen’s heart on several levels. Peggy’s own struggles with addiction and other life challenges as a youth have made her passionate about helping young women realize their potential.
As a late-in-life runner, she also values the strength and life lessons that running can bring. Just before her 50th birthday, Peggy took up running to support a nephew who himself was overcoming addiction – even though running was something she never thought she’d do when she, as Peggy describes it, “couldn’t even run to the mailbox.” Now more than 60 races later (many of which have been at her favorite Disney locales, dressed in everything from Star Wars gear to Tinkerbell tutus!), she’s logged thousands of miles and enjoyed the journey every step of the way.
